I recently reviewed five hundred websites in a weekly series of “Inspiring Websites of the Week” on Despreneur and it began to dawn on me where web design is currently at and where it intends to go. In this article my intention is to review where we currently stand with web design as it is now and envisage where it will go and what we can expect to see in 2015.
The following information is based on extensive research that I have carried out. I have made estimations, assumptions and educated guesses based on my extensive knowledge in web design and I would welcome the opportunity to discuss these thoughts with you. If you have anything to add that I may have missed, please get in touch as I would love to connect and discuss this with others.
1. Natural Stock Photography Website Design
Using these types of images for web design was popular in 2014 and will be even more so in 2015. We have such a huge selection of sites where photos are offered with varied licenses, having said that, there is certainly no shortage of graphics available for web site builders who are using said images for commercial purposes. In short there are many places where you will find graphics that you can do anything you want with them.
2. One-Color Dominance Website Design
We will see many more websites where one color is the dominant theme. Backgrounds, text, image borders, buttons and other features will use the one color more often than not. Designers will use the less is more approach when it comes to color design. Attractive looking sites that are easy to navigate and easy to read are more important to users than fancy colors. Simple designs are more popular from a seo point of view too. Too many complicated plugins or designs can slow sites down. Web designers are onto this and are well aware that seo depends on a fast and easy to navigate site.
3. Video Backgrounds Website Design
We witnessed the popularity in 2014 of video on new websites and this trend is likely to grow. Video is very popular and will be even more so in 2015. If a picture says a thousand words, then video can certainly say much more. Content is king and because video is popular, this is a good SEO strategy.
4. Unique Navigation Menus Website Design
We will see even more creativity when it comes to navigating a site. There will be slide up, slide down menus, more graphics and animation effects which will create an outstanding, unique and unforgettable experience when visiting certain sites.
5. Cards and Tiles Website Design
Since the birth of Pinterest cards and tiles have been growing in popularity. More and more blogs and websites are using these types of designs. 2015 will see this become even more popular. Given the popularity of Pinterest and their presence in a Google search, this is not surprising.
